Home improvement-pressure from sales tactics

Article by Mike Muriithi

In my last post of our home improvement, we briefly discovered why it is important to have the DIY home improvement rather than using the services of the qualified staff. It was not long since most people started complaining of the challenges that they are facing regarding the buying of home improvements. In this article today, we will focus on the reasons why dealing with the home improvement sales team is challenging and the tactics being used to make you believe that you are going somewhere. But are you?

Most of us have been spend a lot of money in buying of the home improvement products, at least to ensure that their home looks habitable. This is good though, if you have the money, and also if you may not have enough time to do the home improvement yourself. Even if you are doing the improvement yourself, buying of home improvement products is quite inevitable in one way or the other. However, the problem comes in when you have to call the sales people to come to your home since it will always be hard to get someone out of the home, this is not a store.

Having this in mind, this here are some of the things which you have to keep in mind so as to ensure that you handle things effectively even as you make your home habitable.

Upselling: we are talking of home improvement salespeople here, and if I am not wrong, they are at all times looking for a chance to market their products too. Thus, when you have called them to your house, you will be hearing ‘advice’ like-’since we are now doing the kitchen improvement, why don’t we also take a look at the bathroom?’ If you are not there yet, then you will here something like ‘yes, I had discovered that your house is missing a gutter, by the time I was entering. Is this a joke? No! You have been saving on the kitchen improvement only and according to how things are by now, you had no problems, but now, you have an eye-opener, there are more problems than what you thought you were improving.

Warranty consideration

When you are considering improving, lets say your window, the main difference between the mid and high-grade window is the warranty allowance. With the mid-grade, you are sure that the warranty is lifetime. This means that the house window is only protected as long as you are there. If you happen to move away for another house and then someone comes in, then the case is closed as far as the warranty is concerned. But do you care of who else is coming? The double warranty may be the best. Why? This is because the warranty will be given to the house and to the person owning it. Still with me? I mean, the warranty will still be there as long as the house is there, even after you have moved and another person owning it. The high-grade window comes with double lifetime warranty. Doesn’t that sound great-let alone you here the price difference, a whole 400$ variation for the home improvement.

Short term sales deals-watch out

Some of these home improvement salespeople will make you a price list of what you want done quickly so as to close the deal. But then if you are not careful, they may have given you a price list that is only functional within a very short duration of let’s say 24 hours. Don’t be pressured by the bottom page shoeing that you are going to save money; something has been into consideration-time!

Bottom line

We are talking about your home and your money. I don’t see the reason why someone should be pressuring you on what should be done. You are the owner and so they should be listening to you and not you listening to them. Allow them to offer advice but it not be the home improvement salespeople making the decisions for you-keep making your home smart!

Home Improvement question by tiffany10784: Are there any home improvement sites for renters?
We’re renting a house, and I want to fixup the bathroom and the kitchen, but all the home improvement and makeover sites I’ve been to only have stuff that I know I can’t and don’t want to do, so if anyone knows of any sites, or if anyone has any ideas of their own, I would appreciate it! I’m looking for things I can do myself.

First and foremost, make sure you get the Ok from the owner to make the changes. I know that if you don’t, he can make you put it back the way it was at your expense. Don’t know what kind of improvements your looking to do, but you could do anything from painting to tiling. How much do you want to spend? What will the owner let you do? You could put in a new medicine cabinet and sink. Change the toilet to another color. There are a ton of things that can be done, but some are more costly than others.
